Champagnes are sparkling wines originating from the vineyards of the Champagne region in France. Generally, the grapes used for Champagne are white Chardonnay, dark-skinned Pinot Meunier or Pinot Noir which in the absence of skin contact during the fermentation process also gives out a white base wine. Champagnes, including rosé wines, are usually a blend of all 3 types of grapes mentioned earlier. Blanc de Blancs Champagnes are created from 100% Chardonnay grapes and Blanc de Noirs Champagnes are made exclusively from Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir or a mixture of both.
Here are some of the best Champagnes available at The Grand Store:
Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage
Moët & Chandon’s Grand Vintage Champagnes are uniquely made from the grapes of a single exceptional year. It is so exceptional and rare that since the year 1842, less than 80 vintage champagnes have been released. They are aged in the wine cellars for at least 5 years. The blend ratio is 41% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Noir and 26% Pinot Meunier. This Champagne is rich, fruity and fresh. It is pale, bright yellow with fine beads and green reflections. The nose begins with hints of fresh flowers that develop into smoky fresh-baked bread, hazelnuts and walnuts, and later into the nectarine, ripe pear and white peaches. It has a soft and supple cashmere-like texture. The initial sweetness gently moves over to crisp, structured acidity. A lingering finish opens up a hint of iodine underscored by a mouth-watering, tangy note of pink grapefruit.
Dom Pérignon P2
Dom Pierre Pérignon was a Benedictine monk who lived in France in the 17th century and is considered to be the pioneer of several winemaking techniques. Dom Pérignon Champagne is considered to be so exceptional, elegant and high-quality that in 1981, it was chosen for the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana. This Champagne is made from carefully selected Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varieties only and is known for its outstanding finesse and flavour. Dom Pérignon P2 comes in vintage form only. So every bottle of this Champagne contains grapes harvested in the same year from the same crop. Aged for around 16 years, Dom Pérignon P2 (second plenitude) has magnificent energy, intensity and vibrancy. It has a very creamy and rich mouthfeel with lasting intensity. The nose is buttery toast with cookie dough, hay, and sweet, vanilla-laden fruit and honeycomb. This full-bodied and textural Champagne has an exuberant palate with hints of firming phenolics and fine beads of effervescence that finish off to a mineral freshness giving it a seductive, balanced taste
Armand De Brignac Rose
Armand de Brignac Champagnes are co-owned by Moët-Hennessy and Shawn ‘Jay Z’ Carter. To ensure the highest standards of quality, only a selected group of 18 highly skilled people touch this Champagne bottle, right from the fruit pressing to the time the bottles are moved out of the cellars and each step of this laborious process is done by hand. Armand de Brignac’s winemaking signature is in the selection of the very first, finest and freshest portion of the cuvée press for producing the best possible Champagnes. Armand De Brignac Rose is a part of Jay Z s “Ace of Spades” collection. The blend ratio is 10% Chardonnay, 50% Pinot Noir and 40% Pinot Meunier. This award-winning salmon-coloured Champagne has a seductive, immediate nose of strawberries, black currant, soft spice and sweet almonds. Its tangy acidity makes it fresh and vibrant. It is complex, fresh and full-bodied on the palate and has a gentle and long finish.
Krug Grand Cuvee Brut
Krug Grand Cuvée Brut is considered by many as the best non-vintage Champagne in the world. Krug Champagnes are unique because, unlike most of the other Champagnes, Krug keeps the base wines separate, which are sampled and checked for their quality individually and then blended together later. The Champagne is aged in wooden casks and goes through a special malolactic fermentation to make it complex, rich and long-ageing. This light golden liquid has aromas of ripe citrus fruits and blooming flowers that are complemented by warm notes of gingerbread and marzipan. The palate shows sweet almond and hazelnut characters on the forefront with delicate, soft flavours of honey and brioche that lead to a very enjoyable smooth finish.
